A Rising Tide is a leadership and curatorial development program, initiated in partnership by Next Wave and VicHealth and involving four early-career practitioners, Banda, Matisse Laida, MaggZ, and Lydia Tesema—collectively known as the Young Artistic Directorate.

A Rising Tide encourages experimentation and risk-taking in curating, community building and culture-making, and is guided by Next Wave’s Young Creative Lead, Nickila De Silva. A Rising Tide emerged in response to a sector need for mentorship and capacity building for early-career artists and community organisers. This includes learning how to advocate—as an early-career practitioner—for accessible, culturally safe, and ethical working conditions, and how to navigate presumptions about young people that can negatively impact early-career participation and engagement in the arts.

As a convener, Next Wave—whose values are grounded in justice, friendship, and care—supports this through several methods: intergenerational and transdisciplinary collaborations, long-form and intersectional relationship building, and exploring experimental practice. Sometimes this looks like sharing food, hanging out and making art together.

As an inaugural program, A Rising Tide taps into Next Wave’s commitment to support a world shaped by artists, and its forty-year history as a launch pad for early-career practitioners.

Schedule of Events 2024

Fri 19 Jan – A Rising Tide: Y-AD Launch shoot day

Purpose: Create multiple short videos and hero images to share and hard-launch the A Rising Tide program and the respective Young Artistic Directorate. This clip is intended to highlight the personalities, processes and work of the Young Artistic Directorate from the micro to the macro, offering insight into this exciting new program and the people behind it. This content will be used to build the personal profiles of the Y-AD and to build the ART profile, to bring traction to the years programming/events, while also acting as a tool for documentation for VicHealth objectives.

Fri 8 Mar – Future River: IWD performance

For IWD, Next Wave’s Young Artistic Directorate partnered with Brunswick Music Festival, PHOTO 2024, BlakDot Gallery and Arts Merri-bek to present a special performance inspired by the exhibition, Future Rivers: When the Past Flows. The International Women’s Day Performance will be the Y-AD’s first curatorial project – inviting them to experiment with their collaborative/curatorial framework. This process includes asking the question, ‘Who gets to decide and why?’

Fri 19 Apr – (nexus) launch: MaggZ Radical Hospitality

'Next Wave x (nexus) Launch is a multi-sensory Radical hospitality event of experimental dance battles, cuisines and a party. Curated by Next Wave Young Artistic Director MaggZ, assisted by Carmen Yih, (nexus) invites you to explore the theme of Devour, where they implore us to ask the question, “What does it mean to Devour? How does it feel to Devour? And why are we being Devoured?”'
